Geneva Sue was born to William Franklin Swanson and Letha Leola Creasman in Hixson, Tennessee on October 16th, 1932. She met her husband to be, Dr. John Philip Spitzbergen, during revival services in Chattanooga in July of 1954. He proposed within the week and they were married on May 20th, 1955. Together they raised six children: Winona, Mark, Geneva, Rachel, Michael and Faith.
Sue was a servant; she always put others before herself. She said her best prayer times were while she was doing dishes and washing the laundry. She prayed over her children as she ironed and folded clothes. Sue was a people lover and prayed for everyone as if they were her own family. There was not a selfish bone in her body. She was the kind of person that would give the clothes off her back. If she had it and someone was in need, she would share it.
Mama lived and walked by faith. Jesus was her savior, soul and body. Anytime you asked her how she was doing she would say, "I am blessed!" When she had a life threatening brain hemorrhage she refused surgery and said, "I will make an appointment with the One who made this body." God completely healed her and she lived miracle after miracle. She always said "By His stripes I was healed 2000 years ago!"
Sue loved to share the gospel. Everywhere she went she would talk to people about Jesus. She was constantly finding ways to connect people with the Word of life, like police officers that she would remind were doing the Lord’s service.
Anyone who knew Mama Sue could see her bulldog determination and unwavering faith. She would only accept the eternal purposes of God for every situation. If someone would say “don’t you see this?” she would say, “I see the eternal purposes of God.” She was a powerhouse in a small body!
Mother said all of her children and grandchildren would serve God. She was so determined that they would all make heaven. She often said that if she had to she would drag them in kicking and screaming.
She believed and lived the Word of God and often sang "I feel good, just to know I've been redeemed makes me feel good!" She loved much and was deeply loved by all. She will be missed.
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first." 1 Thessalonians 4:16
